Conversations With Chuck Wepner . A personal correspondence began back and forth via the internet. I wrote to Mr. Wepner and asked for an autographed picture, but I received more than just that. For instance, it was speculated that a scene from the 1982 film Rocky III had been influenced by Wepner's fight against Andre the Giant, as the movie features a match versus wrestler Hulk Hogan as "Thunderlips", who throws Rocky out of the ring. "The Real Rocky" is a made-for-television documentary, but a few nights before its premiere on ESPN, it finds its way to the big screen as part of the Philadelphia Film Festival. The autographed picture shows Chuck flopping onto the ropes with his gloves up and still ready to fight … In September 1978, less than two years after his big-screen avatar appeared in the form of Stallone's Rocky Balboa, Wepner lost his final match to finish his career with a 35-14-2 record. Sylvester Stallone's character Rocky Balboa and portions of the Rocky film series were inspired by the life of Chuck Wepner. Chuck Wepner is the real Rocky Balboa and he'd be happy to tell you all about it.
