Tundra Swan Circumpolar Distribution A male tundra swan may appear larger than a female trumpeter. These elegant creatures - slightly smaller than our other native species, the Trumpeter Swan - nest on arctic tundra and visit the U.S. only on migration and in winter. The public is invited to a Trumpeter Swan Soiree, celebrating North America’s largest waterfowl species, at Walnut Woods State Park from 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., on Jan. 27. Most have a smudge of yellow at the base of their black bill, but otherwise are pure white. Today, there are about 5,000 trumpeter swans in Wisconsin, including these six, which have made their home on Sandhill Wildlife Area, right along Trumpeter Trail for all visitors to see.
