Sakishima Habu Snake Bite can take place when one comes into contact with the venomous snake, usually unintentionally or inadvertently. The Habu is an indigenous, venomous snake on Okinawa. Every year approximately 250 people are bitten by habus, usually agricultural workers, but no serious problems resulting from visitors bitten by snakes have been reported to the American Consulate in recent memory.

The venom is hemotoxic and can cause bleeding and coagulation defects; the severity of symptoms though, depend on a combination of factors such as the size of the snake and the health of the individual bitten KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- (Editor's note: This is the second article in a series about the habu snake and the consequences of being bitten.)
Two native and two introduced species of habu snakes inhabit the vegetation and jungle of Okinawa, making hiking and late-night ground travel very dangerous for people here.
