Ilha dos Marinheiros (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈiʎɐ duz maɾiˈɲejɾus] "Island of the Sailors") is an island located in the south part of a lagoon named Lagoa dos Patos, located in the municipality of Rio Grande, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.It is situated on the west bank of that lagoon. Lagoa dos Patos , English: Ducks' Lake is the largest lagoon in Brazil is the second largest lagoon in Latin America after that of Maracaibo in Venezuela. It is located in the most southern State of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. The Jacuí-Guaíba and Camaquã Rivers empty into it, while the navigable São Gonçalo Channel, which enters Lagoa dos Patos near the town of Pelotas, connects Lagoa dos Patos to Lagoa Mirim to the south. The Rio Grande, at the south end of Lagoa dos Patos, forms the outlet to the Atlantic. Lagoa dos Patos is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a sandbar about 5 miles (8.0 km) wide.
