The chick's father may feed the chick a kind of "milk" (produced by special glands in his throat) to help the chick survive until the mother returns.
Gentoos are the most northerly of the 4 Antarctic species. Gentoo parents, which often form long-lasting bonds, are highly nurturing. They usually lay two eggs by mid- October , which hatch in about 34 days, and put equal care into caring for either chick. They undertake this springtime ritual from the age of three onwards, usually with the same partner. They have a circumpolar distribution, breeding on sub-Antarctic islands and the Antarctic Peninsula (46-65°S). The female will lay 2 eggs and the incubationis shared by both parents, alternating daily. They typically live and breed in same areas. When encountering a predator, they will simply retreat. At breeding time, both parents will work to build a circular nest of stones, grass, moss, and feathers. They have a life expectancy of up to 20 years and the total breeding population is estimated to be 314,000 pairs. These penguins are very shy and do not tend to defend their territories. The Gentoo penguins are diurnal and social birds, breeding in colonies and remaining together for the rest of the year. Sometimes, chicks hatch while their mothers are away, collecting food. Life Cycle Like all penguins babies come from an egg. There are approximately 320,000 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins. Loyal and nurturing, these sea birds form lasting bonds and never venture far from the breeding ground all year round, unlike other penguin species that migrate. Young chicks remain in the nest for 3 to 4 weeks until their second down feathers grow in, during which their parents hunt for food in order to feed them. Afterward, they leave the nest but remain in the colony in groups of chicks, called creches that free their parents to hunt for food for them. Emperor penguin colonies spread out in summer, but huddle together for warmth in winter. When the Gentoos are a infant they have Grey poofy fur. These penguins nest on the ground, making nests of stones , sticks , grass , feathers , and various other materials.
